Ashmead Kernel

Ashmead's Kernel

Ashmead’s Kernel

A very aromatic  dessert apple of distinction. If well grown and picked at the right time, it has a wonderful flavour. The apple was already known in the mid-18th century. It was raised by the physician Dr. Ashmead who lived in the city of Gloucester. By the late 1700s, the variety was already mentioned by various nurseries in Gloucestershire.

In order to grow regular crops, a good pollinator such as  Sunset or Red Pippin is essential. The apple is of medium size. The skin is greenish yellow with faint russeted patches. It is ready to pick in October and has a reasonable storage quality, if kept in cool conditions.
